India is preparing to make history again in space exploration, and leading this new chapter is Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla, a distinguished pilot from the Indian Air Force. Known for his discipline, flying prowess, and scientific curiosity, Shukla has been selected as the first Indian astronaut to visit the International Space Station (ISS) aboard Axiom Mission 4 (Ax-4), scheduled for launch in June 2025.
From Lucknow to the Skies
Born on October 10, 1985, in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, Shubhanshu Shukla developed a deep interest in aviation and science at an early age. He pursued his academic training at the National Defence Academy (NDA) and was commissioned into the Indian Air Force (IAF) in 2006. Over the years, he has flown a variety of aircraft including the Su-30 MKI, MiG-21, MiG-29, Jaguar, and Hawk, accumulating over 2,000 hours of flying experience.
His operational and test pilot experience earned him a place among the elite few selected for ISRO’s Gaganyaan mission, India’s first indigenous manned spaceflight program.
Axiom Mission 4: A Milestone for India
While ISRO’s Gaganyaan mission remains under development, Shukla was nominated for a pioneering international opportunity—to represent India aboard Axiom Space’s Ax-4 mission to the ISS. He underwent intense astronaut training in Russia and at NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas, as part of a global crew comprising astronauts from the U.S., Hungary, and Poland.
The mission is being launched aboard SpaceX’s Falcon 9 rocket using the Crew Dragon spacecraft, with former NASA astronaut Peggy Whitson as the commander. Shukla will serve as the mission pilot, making him the first Indian to visit the ISS and the second Indian in space after Rakesh Sharma, who flew with the Soviet Union in 1984.
Scientific and Diplomatic Impact
During the two-week mission, Shukla and his fellow astronauts will conduct around 60 scientific experiments. These include studies in microgravity, biotechnology, sustainable food systems, and life support technologies. His participation not only highlights India’s space capabilities but also enhances global collaboration in space research.
